Choose Happiness

Choose Happiness

When I was a senior in high school, I received some good advice from a friend’s dad. I was going through one of life’s disappointments and honestly, a personal pity party. He looked at me and said this, “Brandon, sometimes life is not fair. The quicker you learn that lesson and accept it, the quicker you’ll be able to get back up on your feet when life knocks you down.” For some reason, I always have to remind myself of those words when I walk through the valleys of life.

About 5 years after that lesson, I remember sitting in my mentor’s office in Tyler, Texas and looking at a new book he just picked up. He placed this book with the greatest intentionality in the best spot to see for those who would come in his office. The book was titled, “14,000 Things to be Happy About.” I thumbed through those pages and reflected on its words and eventually started smiling because of its important reminders. The book served as a reminder that there is always something else to think about to lift our spirits when life is hard.

So, I thought I would share with you some things to be happy about today. I don’t know if you’re dealing with one of life’s unfair moments, but this you can be sure of…there are things to be happy about.

Here are just a few:

  • The smile of a close friend
  • A beautiful sunset
  • Looking through old photographs of fond memories
  • God’s unbelievable grace
  • A warm blanket and a dark room
  • A favorite sweatshirt
  • Ice cream
  • A great cup of coffee
  • A laugh that brings tears to your eyes
  • Baby’s hands and feet
  • Hot, fresh donuts
  • Indoor plumbing
  • A day off from work due to snowfall
  • An encouraging letter in the mail
  • The sound of birds singing
  • Reading an incredible book
  • Listening to music that makes you want to dance
  • Singing in the shower
  • Looking out over a mountain range with a multicolored sky
  • Playing with a puppy
  • Acing a test
  • Hearing children giggle
  • Cool evenings
  • The sound of waves at the beach
  • Sweet tea
  • A sincere hug
  • A proud parent
  • Hearing a song that takes you back to a happy memory
  • The smell of bacon cooking waking you up for a new day
  • Friends at church
  • A childlike faith

Life isn’t fair, but God has overcome this world. Take heart. Be strong and courageous.

“For the sake of Christ, then, I am content with weaknesses, insults, hardships, persecutions, and calamities. For when I am weak, then I am strong.” 2 Corinthians 12:10
