Junk Drawer

Junk Drawer

Life has a funny way of teaching us more about God and His ultimate desires to improve our lives. No, this isn’t a Prosperity Gospel message, actually quite the opposite. The Lord has been speaking to me in the last months about getting rid of old belongings instead of adding to the collection!

Just recently my mother passed away, and the ensuing weeks brought painful work sorting through her items. Mom was an organized and neat woman, yet inevitably we sifted through belongings and documents to find their purpose and meaning. This task motivated me to pre-sort my own belongings to simplify a chore that, Lord willing, will one day fall to my children. Holding tight to the things that bring significance, and letting go of the crushing weight of the worthless.

A commonality in American culture is the home’s “Junk Drawer.” You know the place where everything that we “might” need one day, or that doesn’t fit into a simple category, or mementos we just can’t part with will stay until the Lord returns. Within our personal lives we harbor a junk drawer as well, filled with worthless items that hinder instead of equipping us for the purpose of our lives.

That single junk drawer has become cabinets and closets brimming with commonly referred to folk theology, certain misconceptions about what the Bible professes that simply are heresy. They are handed down from one generation to the next like antique furniture or heirloom jewelry, uncertain of their origin but they have got to be worth something! From the idea that loved ones become angels upon death, or you simply just “ask Jesus into your heart,” to floating on clouds in heaven, and the Genie-in-a-Bottle Jesus who is waiting for you to pray so He can come right now to solve problems keeping you from your best life. The list of theologically wrong concepts floods our minds while blocking the true knowledge of God.

Paul wrote in 2 Corinthians 10:5, “We are destroying speculations and every lofty thing raised up against the knowledge of God, and we are taking every thought captive to the obedience of Christ…”

Recently a TV show host was praised by a couple of Christian websites for “boldly sharing the Gospel on her show,” by speaking of forgiveness for a co-worker and quoting Romans 3:23. Unfortunately, for one, she did not share the Gospel (although she did boldly open the door for future conversation) and secondly, so many Christians don’t recognize the difference. In Paul’s first letter to the Corinthians, he clearly explains the Gospel that has to be preached, “that Christ died for our sins according to the Scriptures, and that He was buried, and that He was raised on the third day…” Without Jesus and the Resurrection there is no hope, there is no good news, and there is no salvation! There is only a drawer full of catchy phrases and weird theories delivered from emotional pulpits, click-bait social media sites, and good old-fashioned “did you hear about ____” stories.

The truth of the Word never changes, regardless of the situation or time of your life. Only the Supreme God of the Universe speaks such Truth! I think it is time to open ourselves up to evaluate everything we think about God, and Faith, and the Kingdom that we have in our mental junk drawer. Is this something the Holy Spirit has led me to from the truth of the scriptures, or is this something picked up from a bumper sticker, a best-selling book, or a flashy pulpit message? Does this belief draw me closer to the sovereign God or put another stone in the temple to myself? Is this what I want found in the drawers of my life on judgment day?
