MIDWEEK UPDATE | Sunday the Executive Committee of the Southern Baptist Convention released the report from an independent investigation into the allegations of sexual abuse in the Southern Baptist Convention. The report exposed some in Southern Baptist leadership who have acted as sexual abusers. Perhaps the most gut-wrenching revelation was that victims of sexual abuse had been dismissed, unheard and ignored. Our immediate reaction is shock and grief. We mourn and now must, as a convention of churches, begin a plan of repentance. As a part of the plan, the company secured for the investigation released several recommendations. We are praying for genuine progress as these recommendations are enacted.

Immanuel:
While this grieves me as a Southern Baptist pastor, I am writing to be clear about three things as your pastor.
First, we stand in brokenness with our sister churches across the world, we grieve what has happened, and lament. Second, we want to make clear that we will stand with the abused to provide a church where people can heal and find shelter.

Finally, as many of you know we have had, for many years, protocols in place that, by God’s grace, have proven effective in the prevention of abuse. However, there is no system that cannot be made better. Toward that end I am appointing a team to evaluate our processes, and bring recommendations to make our prevention and safety measures as effective as possible.

If you have further questions, please email me. I plan to be at the SBC next month to learn more. These are dark days, but God is sovereign and our mission from this hill is still clear.
Onward,
Steven Smith

In our worship services yesterday, we commissioned three summer GO Teams with almost 46 team members headed to Brazil, Mission Arlington, and San Diego. Please continue to pray for these groups as they travel to serve, share the Good News, and widen their circles this summer.

Much like Jesus did in the Gospel of John, we’ve spent a lot of time going deeper in the word this year. We started the year with prayer and fasting, we focused on Christ during Holy Week, and our Midweek Bible Study urged us to think biblically about a variety of topics.

But like Jesus in John 21, we’re called to go wider—to expand our circle. The way we intend to do that this summer is by utilizing Wednesday nights. From the end of Midweek on May 25 (this Wednesday!) to when we start back in the fall, there are 13 Wednesdays nights—about 26 hours. We want to encourage you to take those 26 hours to go wider, not deeper.

As you step into summer as a family, ask yourself these questions:

•How can God use me to expand our influence around the church?
•How can you use me to expand my influence around my community and family?

Look for the informational cards throughout the church or online at ibclr.org/circles for details and ideas on how to widen your circle this summer!

After seven months, we are finding our groove with the Dental Clinic at the @CityCenterLR. We served 20+ patients in May! We are so grateful that God allows us to help bring healing and relief through servant-minded dental professionals while our other Kingdom-minded volunteers point them to the hope we have in Jesus.

We are open the second Friday of each month. No appointment needed. First come, first served. Doors open at 8am. Extractions only.

MIDWEEK UPDATE | Join us tonight for Midweek activities! We will have shrimp and grits tonight (which Dr. Smith has been excited about for weeks!) We'll be wrapping up our study in Revelation tonight during Thinking Biblically.

Wednesday, May 25, will be our kids night of worship! Our preschool and kids ministries will be singing together. It will be a wonderful time as we wrap up the springtime of Wednesday nights together!

Join us this Sunday, May 22, as we commission three summer GO Teams with almost 46 team members headed to Brazil, Mission Arlington, and San Diego (swipe!).

Join us as we kick-off the summer by going into our city and connecting with our neighbors on June 1! There will be dinner in Horne Hall from 4:45-6pm. At 6pm, there will be a message from Dr. Smith. Then, at 6:30pm, groups or individuals will go out to different assigned apartment complexes near us with a sno-cone outreach. This will be a time to invite families to VBS, promote summer activities and connect with our neighbors! Sign-up ahead of time to help us know you are coming at ibclr.org. You can also sign-up that night. This is a great opportunity to expand the circle around us!

Vacation Bible School is June 6-9, 2022 from 9am-12pm. We offer classes for children 4 years old to 5th grade (completed). Register online at IBCLR.org/vbs.

We want you to be praying about how God can widen the circles around us as a church, and around you at work, home and play to reach more people with the Gospel! Visit ibclr.org/circle for several ideas on how you can widen your circle, as well as a QR code with training on how you can be intentional in widening your circle this summer!

Jesus Christ, the second Adam, restores us to what
Jesus Christ, the second Adam, restores us to what was lost. In Adam all die, in Christ all who trust in Him are made alive.

That’s what awaits us when we get to heaven.
